IMO Wave Tank Test and COT Test (Crude Oil Test)
IMO, International Maritime Organisation, is the supervising organisation in the field of global shipping. For paint/coating systems and for ballast tanks there is the specification IMO Resolution MSC.215 (82), the so-called Wave Tank Test and for crude oil tanks there is the specification IMO Resolution MSC.288 (87).
For both tests COT has been certified by Lloyds and DNV/GL.
For the Wave Tank Test the COT laboratory has the required measurement setup, a large tank filled with synthetic seawater which, as a swing, goes back and forth in such a way that it simulates a sailing ship for a period of six months with all the temperature fluctuations that one might expect. Also a zinc anode is attached to one of the test panels.
The IMO COT Test (Crude Oil Test) includes an immersion and a gas test for protective coatings for cargo oil tanks of crude oil tankers. In a specific test liquid mixture and a specific humid gas mixture the paint system is tested during 3 and 6 months.
