{"id":11892,"date":"2023-04-19T14:49:16","date_gmt":"2023-04-19T12:49:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nebest-cot.nl\/?page_id=11892"},"modified":"2026-04-16T16:54:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T14:54:07","slug":"saltwater-spray-test","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/nebest-cot.nl\/en\/saltwater-spray-test\/","title":{"rendered":"Salt spray testing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The salt spray test has been used for more than a century to test the corrosion resistance of protective systems on metals.<\/p>\n<p>The standard for this test is a continuous salt spray at 35 \u00b0C with a NaCl concentration of 50 g\/l and a spray volume of 1 ml per 80 cm2 per hour.<\/p>\n<p>The salt spray test is often criticized because it does not simulate reality (excessive salt concentration, incorrect salt solution, continuous spraying, and lack of radiation), meaning correlation with practical application is often absent; however, this is offset by the advantages of having a vast amount of measurement data available, the rapid changes in paint formulations, and the fact that the test is excellently suited for comparative testing, quality control, and initial raw material selection.<\/p>\n<p>The salt spray test is also frequently part of cyclic tests, such as those in ISO 12944 parts 6 and 9.<\/p>\n<p>The most commonly applied standards are ISO 9227, ASTM B117, or IEC 60068-2-11.<\/p>\n<p>The salt spray test is available in several variants. The most widely used is the neutral salt spray test, but there are also acidic salt spray tests and copper-accelerated salt spray tests.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, there are specifications and standards that prescribe other salts and\/or salt concentrations, as well as cyclic salt spray tests.
